Follow me... |
Nowhere in Scripture does Jesus tell his followers to worship him but there are numerous places where he says or commands, "Follow me". Of course this does not mean we should not worship him but it does mean that our first and most important call is to follow him, to be disciples. How do you do that in practice?
When the mother of James and John asked Jesus if her sons could sit on either side of him in the kingdom he used the moment as a teaching opportunity to tell his disciples that the greatest and first among his disciples would be the ones who were servants, even slaves. He gave himself as the example to follow, saying that he did not come to be served, but to serve.
There are two easy-to-find places where we can serve right now:
Firstly, at home we can joyfully do more than just "our share" of the chores.
Secondly, we can resolve to be more aware of those whose paths we cross who are in need, or are vulnerable, or are socially "judged", and seek ways to be more generous with our time and material resources, or simply be respectfully friendly.
There are opportunities aplenty for those who would be disciples and follow Christ, as opposed to "merely" worshipping him.
