Vatican palace turned into home for poor and homeless

The Palazzo Migliori

Situated on St, Peter's Square next to the Vatican, this 19th century palace would have fetched top dollars if sold for a hotel, but Pope Francis had it converted into a homeless shelter instead. The Palazzo Migliori, named after the family who sold it to the Vatican, had served as the headquarters for the Calasanziane order of religious women, who vacated it last year after occupying the building for 70 years when they used it to help and care for young single mothers and who have since relocated.
It required some renovation. Cardinal Konrad Krajewski comments, “I asked a construction company to let the homeless workers do the renovation. They agreed a bit hesitantly but then they were so happy with their work, they decided to hire those people - the owner of the company said they rarely see people who would work so hard.”
